ABOUT 'CHINA CULTURE'
The
China Culture website is produced by China Daily, and published by the
Ministry of Culture, People's Republic of China. Founded in 2003, it is
published in English and Chinese. It aims to promote cultural and economic
exchange between China and the world, by providing information on Chinese history, culture, politics, and economics.
The China Culture website contains an informative article about Chinese
Acrobatics. This explains the stress on the basic training of the waist and
legs, and the importance of the skill of stanidng on the head and hands.
This skill is evident in brick paintings, murals, and pottery figurines dating from
the Han Dynasty, 206 BC to 220 AD. Performers of traditional Chinese magic
needed good acrobatic skills, since under their flowing robes they would conceal
dozens of objects weighing as much as 100 pounds in total. While doing
somersaults they would produce objects such as bowls filled with water or
blazing metal bowls.
