ABOUT 'THE ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL INSTITUTE'
The
Alexander Graham Bell Institute
is part of Cape Breton University, Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. The Institute is
dedicated to the memory of Alexander Graham Bell, his invention of the
telephone, and his other work. It is directed by
a Board of Trustees representing the Bell family, Cape Breton University, and
members of the local community.
It consolidates collections of photographs,
personal notes, and technical work of Alexander Graham Bell, and has completed a
comprehensive index of these materials. Numerous original documents and images
can be downloaded free from the Institute's website.
Born in Edinburgh in 1847, Alexander Bell emigrated with his parents to Canada
in 1870. After his invention of the telephone in 1875, Bell continued with many
experiments in communication, including the invention of the photophone-transmission
of sound on a beam of light - a precursor to current optical fiber systems. He
also worked in medical research and invented methods for teaching speech to the
deaf.
