ABOUT 'ENDEX.COM'

 

The Endex.com website is produced by Gary Feuerstein, the head of the engineering firm Endex Engineering, based in Blodgett, Oregon, USA. The Endex.com website has a section on the Brooklyn Bridge, New York City.

 

The Brooklyn Bridge, for which construction began in 1870, is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the USA. It was designed by John Augustus Roebling, of Trenton, New Jersey. After construction started, Roebling's foot was badly injured by a ferry crashing into a wharf, and he sadly died of tetanus within a few weeks. Roebling's son Washington succeeded him, but was tragically struck with caisson disease (known colloquially as The Bends) and became severely disabled. His wife Emily became his assistant, learning engineering and acting as the link with his on site team. Emily was the first person to cross the bridge when it was completed in 1883. Washington Roebling was too ill to attend the opening ceremony, conducted by President Chester Arthur and Governor Grover Cleveland in front of 14,000 invitees. In recognition of the great engineering achievement of Washington Roebling and his father, the President and Governor on the same day visited Washington Roebling in his home to congratulate him.
