ABOUT 'BONHAMS'

The Bonhams website is published by the Bonhams auction house, which was founded in London in 1793. In addition to paintings, Bonhams covers a broad range of fine art, antiques, and collectibles. These include motor cars and cycles, books, porcelain, contemporary ceramics, jewellery, and rivercraft. Bonhams conducts more than 700 sales a year in its main London salerooms, and in nine salerooms around the UK. It has 22 offices within the UK, from which valuations can be undertaken. It also holds sales in Europe, mainly in Switzerland, Monaco, and Germany.

The Bonhams website has detailed online catalogues for each of its sales. These include high resolution images of the paintings for sale, which may be zoomed into and panned using a flash version. Estimate prices are given for most items. Examples of paintings sales include: British & Continental Pictures, Asian Art, Works of Art, Pictures Oils & Watercolours, 20th Century Decorative Arts, and Victorian Paintings Drawings & Watercolours.

Buyers may make bids by telephone. They can also make absentee online bids. To do this, the buyer goes to the online catalogue, selects a lot, selects 'bid/track', enters user name and password, and leaves a bid. The auction is not live online, and the buyer can only leave a commission bid for Bonhams to bid on their behalf.
