ABOUT 'ABEBOOKS.CO.UK'

 

The AbeBooks.co.uk website is the UK version of the Canada-based Abe Books website. Abe Books, has 120 employees and is now based in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; Dusseldorf, Germany; and Oviedo, Spain. It was incorporated in 1995. The website was launched in 1996. It now lists more than 100 million new and secondhand titles, offered for sale by more then 13,000 bookseller members. Booksellers pay a subscription fee, varying from $25 to $200 per month depending on number of books listed.



Abe Books was founded by two couples: Rick and Vivian Pura, and Keith and Cathy Waters. Keith worked in information technology for the provincial government of British Columbia; Cathy ran a used book shop. They saw the internet as a way of bringing together secondhand books and the individuals who want them.

 

The AbeBooks.co.uk website is organised into the following main sections: Search, Rare Book Room, New Books, New & Secondhand Textbooks, and Books for Cooks. Other sections cover Bestsellers, and the five top subjects: Literature & Fiction, Children's Books, History Books, Hobby & Leisure Books, and Textbooks. There is also a section for Antiquarian Books.

 

Special services include three free email newsletters: The Avid Collector, the Avid Reader Book Club, and The Avid Reader. There is also a Book Sleuth feature. This assists users who cannot remember the title or author of a book they are seeking. Users post a short description of what they can remember on a bulletin board, and other users guide them to the book they are trying to recall.
