The AbeBooks website is the world's largest marketplace for used books. It was founded in 1996 by Rick and Vivian Pura and Keith and Cathy Waters - two couples living in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Cathy ran a used book store in Victoria, and Keith worked in information technology for British Columbia's provincial Government.

Cathy found that people were constantly coming into her shop asking for a particular used book, and the only way of helping them was the costly and cumbersome process of putting an advertisement in a trade magazine. She consulted Rick, Vivian, and her husband Keith, and AbeBooks was born.

AbeBooks works with thousands of independent booksellers around the world, enabling them to upload details to their stock to the AbeBooks website. Orders are placed online, and are fulfilled by the individual bookstore. AbeBooks currently holds details of over 100 million books on its website. Users can search by author, title or keyword. AbeBooks has more than 120 employees, in Canada and also in offices in Dusseldorf in Germany, Oviedo in Spain, and Berkeley in California.
