We have selected Ellisisland.org as the world's very best website on Ellis Island.
The EllisIsland.org website is published by the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation Inc. The Foundation was established in 1982 by President Ronald Regan. He asked Lee Iacocca, then Chairman of Chrysler Corporation, to lead a private sector fund raising effort to restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. More than $500m was raised, and has been applied to the restoration of these two important monuments.
The EllisIsland.org website is divided into the following main sections: Passenger Search, Ellis Island, Genealogy, Support the Foundation, Gift Shop, and Gift Certificate.
The Passenger Search section, set up with the help of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon Church) enables users to search the records of more than 22 million immigrants to the USA who passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924. The data is drawn from detailed passenger lists, know as ship's manifests.
The Ellis Island section contains illustrated articles on: Ellis Island Immigrant Experience, Ellis Island History, Ellis Island Timeline, Ellis Island Photo Albums, Ellis Island Family Histories, Ellis Island & the Peopling of America, and Visiting Ellis Island.
