We have selected National Parks Service as the world's very best website on the Grand Canyon.
The National Park Service is part of the US Department of the Interior. It cares for a network of nearly 400 natural, cultural, and recreational sites across the USA. Their mission is to preserve, protect, and share these national assets.
The National Park Service website has a substantial section on the Grand Canyon. It is organized into the following main sections: Plan your Visit, Photos & Multimedia, History & Culture, Nature & Science, For Teachers, For Kinds, News, Management, and Support Your Park.
The Plan Your Visit section covers: Directions to the Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon Operating Hours & Seasons, Fees & Reservations, Things to Do at the Grand Canyon, and Things to Know Before You Come. The Photos & Multimedia section contains several albums of historic and current photographs, which can be viewed as slideshows. The John Wesley Powell Photograph Index contains photographs from his second expedition in 1871 down the Colorado River through what would later become known as the Grand Canyon. There is also a live webcam, looking west from Yavapai Point.
Included within the History & Culture section is the full text and illustrations of the Administrative History of Grand Canyon National Park. This is an illustrated political and economic history of the park from the start of the 20th century to the present, which is freely downloadable.
