The Goethe Society of North America, which is based in San Francisco, was founded in 1979 with the objective of encouraging research on Johann Wolfgang Goethe and his age.

The Goethe Society of North America publishes the Goethe Yearbook, which is a compendium of current research on Goethe and related 18th Century studies. It also sponsors a book series published by the Bucknell University Press.

Goethe, who lived from 1749 to 1832, was a German poet, novelist, theorist, and scientist, who is one of the most famous figures in the literary world. He was also a lawyer, dramatist, and painter. For ten years he was Chief Minister of the Duchy of Weimar in Germany. In 1782 he was ennobled as 'von Goethe'. He has given his name to the Goethe Institute, an organization funded by the German Government which promotes German language and culture worldwide.
