We have selected MathWorld as the world's very best website on Mathematics.
The MathWorld website is an online encyclopaedia of mathematics, with more than 12,000 entries. Each is a short article, with references and relevant links. MathWorld is published by Wolfram Research, a leading technical software company, based in Champaign, Illinois, USA. MathWorld is edited by Eric Weisstein, who is employed as an encyclopedist by Wolfram Research.
The MathWorld website grew out of a 200-page Word document with hyperlinks, 'Eric's Treasure Trove of Sciences', which Weisstein created as a graduate student at Caltech in 1995.
It is organized in the following main sections: Algebra, Applied Mathematics, Calculus & Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Foundations of Mathematics, Geometry, History & Terminology, Number Theory, Probability & Statistics, Recreational Mathematics, Topology. There is also an alphabetical index, and a facility to retrieve a random entry.
In addition to its encyclopaedia entries, MathWorld offers: The MathWorld Classroom, with pop-up capsule summaries for more than 300 mathematical terms, and Interactive Entries including applets for interactive three-dimensional geometry.
