ABOUT 'DESIGNBOOM'

The Designboom website is produced in Milan, Italy, under the leadership of Birgit Lohmann, editor in chief. It provides snapshot reports from international design shows, architectural and art exhibitions, and interviews with and profiles of leading figures in the contemporary creative scene and in design history.

The Designboom website includes a substantial section on Mies van der Rohe. This is organized into the following main parts: Biography of Mies van der Rohe, Mies van der Rohe Exhibitions, The Barcelona Pavilion, The Farnsworth House, The Twin Towers, and The Seagram Building. Each of these buildings is described in an illustrated article.

Along with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, the German architect Mies van der Rohe is one of the leading masters of modern architecture. Two of his famous sayings were 'Less is more', and 'God is in the details'.

Born in 1886, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe worked in his father's stone carving workshop before moving to Berlin, where he became an apprentice to the architect Peter Behrens. In the early 1930s Mies van der Rohe served briefly as the last Director of the failing Bahuas design school. With his work under attack from the Nazis, he reluctantly emigrate to the USA in 1937. He died in 1969.
