ABOUT 'POETS.ORG'
The
Poets.org website is published by the Academy
of American Poets. The Academy was founded in 1934 to support American poets at
every stage of their careers, and to foster the appreciation of contemporary
poetry. The Academy now has a wide variety of programs, including National
Poetry Month (April), online educational resources providing free poetry lesson
plans for high school teachers, and a collection of over 700 recordings of poems
dating back to the 1960s.
The Poets.org website is organized into the following main sections: Poets &
Poetry, On Writing Poetry, Donate, Poetry Near You, and Educators. The section
on Poets & Poetry offers hundreds of essays and interviews about poetry,
biographical articles on more than 500 poets, and the text of almost 2,000
poems. There are also audio clips of 150 poems.
The On Writing section covers: Discussion Forum, Essays on Writing, American
Poet Magazine, Academy Book Awards, the Writing & Publishing Frequently Asked
Questions. There is also information on the journal 'American Poet' which is
published twice a year by the Academy of American Poets. It includes essays and
interviews on writing craft. Each issue includes a 'manuscript study' that
analyzes the process by which a poem was created.
