ABOUT 'THE ADVENTURES OF HERMAN'

 

The Adventures of Herman website presents useful information about worms, through the autobiography of Herman the Worm. It is produced as part of the Urban Programs Resource Network of University of Illinois Extension, USA. It is available in English and Spanish.



The Adventures of Herman website is organized into the following main sections: My History, My Family Tree, Worm Anatomy, Come Live With Me, Worm Deli, Can't Live Without Me, Worm Facts, My Fun Place, and Worm Links.

The My History section explains that worms have not always existed in North America. It is thought that they were brought over by early European settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many immigrants would bring plants from their own countries, and worms travelled in the soil. Any predecessors of the modern worm were probably wiped out of North America by the last Ice Age more than 10,000 years ago. The Can't Live Without Me section explains the

important contribution that worms make to agriculture, both by turning the soil, and by producing a valuable fertilizer in the form of their castings.
